TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Tampa police are investigating a fatal crash that happened Monday afternoon.
Police were called to the intersection of East MLK Jr. Blvd. and North 50th Street just before 1 p.m. for a reported multi-vehicle collision.
Two men died in the crash, according to TPD. Two minors were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition.
According to investigators, the driver of a dump truck, a man in his late 40s, failed to notice stopped traffic ahead on North 50th Street and swerved to try to avoid a collision. However, in doing so, officials said the driver hit the back of a minivan with two minors riding as passengers.
The driver of the minivan, a man in his 60s, died after being taken to a hospital, and the two children were hospitalized.
The dump truck then veered onto the shoulder, hitting a man in his 20s who police said had briefly gotten out of a company box truck to place a company sign on the side of the road.
The passenger who exited his vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials said the dump truck continued forward, hitting three more vehicles before it finally came to a stop. Two out of three of the adult drivers were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“This tragedy is a sobering reminder of how quickly lives can be changed on the road,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends mourning this unimaginable loss. We urge everyone to stay mindful and make safe choices behind the wheel, not just for themselves but for everyone on the road.”
According to investigators, the driver of the dump truck did not exhibit any signs of impairment and did not appear to have any medical episodes. He was issued a court summons for careless driving resulting in death, police said.
Traffic was shut down on North 50th Street from East MLK Jr. Blvd. to North 32nd Street.
Drivers are asked to seek alternate routes while officers investigate the crash.
