[09-30-24] Fleeing Driver Involved in Fatal Crash

St. Petersburg, FL – On September 28, 2024, at approximately 2:54 AM, a vehicle pursuit involving a Toyota Camry ended in a fatal multi-vehicle collision on 34th Street North, near 38th Avenue North. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), the Camry was observed driving over a median southbound on US-19 near Seville Boulevard by an FHP Trooper, prompting an attempted traffic stop.

The Camry driver fled the scene, leading the trooper on a pursuit southbound toward 34th Street North. Near Park Boulevard, the trooper attempted a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver, but the driver regained control and fled southbound.

According to FHP, as the Camry approached the intersection of 38th Avenue North, an eastbound tractor-trailer was turning onto 34th Street North. The Camry veered into the northbound lanes to avoid the truck, colliding with two vehicles—a box truck and a Toyota Tundra—stopped at a red light.

One occupant in the Camry sustained serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital, where they later died. The other three occupants of the vehicle, all unrestrained and ranging in age from 18 to 20, were also transported to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Troopers are working to identify which of the four occupants was driving at the time of the crash.

The drivers of the other vehicles involved, a 33-year-old man from Davenport operating the box truck and a 46-year-old St. Petersburg man driving the Toyota Tundra, as well as a 73-year-old passenger in the Tundra, suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to local hospitals.

No charges have been filed yet as the investigation is ongoing.

CAR ACCIDENT STATISTICS

Car accidents happen all too often in the United States. According to the U.S. Transportation Department, the number of traffic deaths nationwide surged in the first nine months of 2021 to 31,720. The number was 12 percent higher than the same period in 2020 and the highest nine-month figure since 2006.

The bustling cities of Florida are a hotbed for possible car accidents. Highways such as the I-4, US-1, and I-10, are some of the deadliest roadways in Florida and unfortunately provide many opportunities for potentially serious car accidents.

Following the nationwide trend, Florida car accidents have also been on the rise. According to the Florida Highway Patrol and Motor Vehicles database, statewide fatalities from crashes were up nearly 10 percent from 3,332 fatalities in 2020 to 3,629 in 2021. It was also ranked third most dangerous state to drive in, according to a report by Uplift Legal Funding.

There are many different types of car accidents, but multi-vehicle accidents are one of them. When two or more cars come together, accidents like this happen all the time. You have a good chance that three vehicles will be hit when two vehicles hit each other.

A variety of factors caused these collisions. Distracted driving, speeding, driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, driving in bad weather, driving the wrong way, and failing to obey traffic laws are examples of dangerous behaviors.
